Randy Jay Grad spent a lifetime being ashamed of his own name.
In 8th grade, his Spanish teacher, who was from the UK, told everyone in front of class, what my name, Randy, meant in the UK, as a joke.
In the UK, Randy, means horny.
I don’t think she was trying to be mean spirited, but the entire class laughed at me, and then I was picked on that entire year.
And it stuck with me. I spent my adult life ashamed of my own name.
Then around my 40th birthday, I decided it was time to flip the script, and own it.
I decided I was going to be in in the joke. And I from here on out, I could laugh at myself too…I was going to own it from this moment on….and so…The Randy Unicorn was born.
I played my first gig as The Randy Unicorn at TIME Nightclub in Costa Mesa, with The Randy Unicorn in lights behind me as I played to a huge crowd….
And I got the most amazing cheering ovation from the crowd as I waved goodbye and ended my set.
It was beautiful….
